ANOVA Science Education President Robert Landsman to Deliver 2012 NJ Science Convention Keynote Address

Should teachers be called "neuroeducators"? Dr. Robert E. Landsman will merge concepts from brain research, competitive skills necessary in this twenty-first century, and using scientific practices as an instructional tool in the K-12 classroom to provide a compelling answer to this question.

www.ScientificInquiry.com) announced today that it will sponsor its president, Dr. Robert E. Landsman, as this year’s New Jersey Science Convention’s keynote banquet speaker. His talk, “Neuron to Brain: Connectivity Impact on 21st Century Worldlings,” will be delivered to teachers and administrators at the Princeton Marriott at Forrestal in Princeton, NJ, on October 9, 2012.

Dr. Landsman will wear his dual hats as neuroscientist and educator as he bridges current neuroscience research findings about the brain with twenty-first century education focus on competitive skills and the use of scientific practices in the classroom. The content will highlight the importance of applying to instruction in K-12 education information about the skills necessary for competing in the twenty-first century and some of the newest neuroscience findings about the impact of experience on the brain.

The topics are extremely timely as they coincide with the origins and focus of the “Framework” for and soon-to-be released “Next Generation Science Standards” (NGSS). According to Landsman, “The imaging technologies now available to researchers are providing compelling evidence that the brain changes dramatically over the lifespan of the individual. These changes not only include gross volume, but also cells and their connectivity with each other, and even the functioning of pathways of information flow. Many of these changes and/or how we respond to them are influenced by our experiences and this is where the teacher and classroom can make a world of difference in the future of each student.” He continued, “It is my hope that the outcome from my talk encourages teachers to become educated consumers of the findings from brain research so that they may begin to more critically evaluate claims of the programs they are considering for adoption as well as their own classroom practices.”
